Affiliate link: definition and meaning

Definition

An individual link with part recognition. If a user clicks on it and buys, the sale is assigned to the publisher and paid with a Commission.

Also called: partner link, tracking link

An affiliate link is a link that contains a unique identifier of the partner. For readers, it looks like any other link and leads to the same goal – for example, to a product in an online shop. In the background, however, the identifier ensures that the tracking system recognizes which publisher the user came across.

auf Klick, the link usually forwards the user briefly via the server of the affiliate network. There, the click is counted and – depending on the procedure – a cookie is set or a click ID is handed over to the shop. If the user buys within the cookie duration, the shop reports the order and the publisher receives his commission.

A typical affiliate link consists of three parts: the address of the network, the partner and program ID and the actual destination in the shop. In addition, Sub-IDs can be attached to later evaluate which page or which button triggered the sale.

An affiliate link can lead to the homepage of a shop or as Deeplink directly to a specific product. Deeplinks usually convert much better because the user ends up exactly where he wants to buy.

Yes. Affiliate links are advertising and must be recognizable to readers. Usually, an indication such as “Advertising”, “Advertising” or “Affiliate Link” is directly on the link or clearly visible at the beginning of a post. More on this under Labeling obligation.

With Adlesa, you create affiliate links directly in the publisher account: select program, insert destination URL, optionally add a sub-ID –penttal ultimate. A detailed guide with examples can be found in the guides Affiliate links: What they are and how to create them.
