Briefly explained

To start with affiliate marketing, you need a niche, your own channel with a target group and a free account at a affiliate network. Then apply to suitable partner programs, build affiliate links into helpful content and label them as advertising. Up to the first regular income usually three to twelve months pass.

What you need to start

The good news first: Getting started hardly costs any money. Participation in partner programs is free for Publisher, and you don’t need your own product or stock. What you invest is mostly time. For the start, you should bring the following:

  • A topic you are familiar with – or that interests you so much that you want to familiarize yourself.
  • A channel on which you publish regularly: website, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest or newsletter.
  • Some staying power. Reach is growing slowly. Those who give up after eight weeks often never see the results.
  • Basics in law and tax: imprint, data protection, advertising labeling and, if applicable, a trade.

With your own website typically only costs for domain and hosting, usually between 5 and 15 € per month. You can start social media channels without running costs. If you want to read again how the model basically works, our basic article What is affiliate marketing?

Step 1: Finding the Right Niche

The niche is the most important decision at the beginning. It determines which partner programs are eligible, how much competition you have and how much you earn per sale. A good niche meets four criteria:

Purchase intent

People are looking for products, comparisons and recommendations – for example, “best battery lawn mower” instead of “history of the lawn mower”.

Matching programs

There are several partner programs with fair terms. A look at the Partner Program Directory shows what is in your industry.

Own competence

You can recommend credibly because you can use, test or classify products yourself.

Feasible competition

Instead of “fitness” prefer “strength training at home for beginners”. The narrower the niche, the faster you become visible.

A common misconception is to select the niche only after the highest Commission. High commissions attract a lot of competition, and without real interest, it is difficult to produce good content over months. Better: a topic that interests you and in which people regularly spend money.

Step 2: Choose the right channel

Affiliate marketing works on many platforms. What matters is where your target group is looking for advice – and which format is yours:

ChannelStrengthsTo be observed
Website and BlogPermanent visitors via Google, full control, many link placesSearch engine traffic builds up over months
YouTubeHigh confidence, videos rank longExpensive production
Instagram and TikTokFast reach, personal attachmentContent quickly outdated, links only in bio and stories
PinterestPins bring clicks over months, direct links possibleStrong at home, fashion, recipes, DIY
NewsletterOwn reach independent of algorithmsNeeds another channel to win subscribers

For starters, focus on one main channel and do it right. Many successful publishers later combine a website as a base with a social media channel and a newsletter.

Step 3: Clarify legal and commercial matters

Before the first commissions flow, you should complete the formalities. This sounds elaborate, but is done in a few hours:

  • Imprint and privacy policy: For websites that are not purely private, an imprint is mandatory. The privacy policy must also mention affiliate links and cookies used. What is important is in the section for Publisher of our GDPR guide.
  • Advertising labeling: Affiliate links must be recognizable as advertising. What this looks like, explains the article Label affiliate links correctly (see also Labeling obligation).
  • Register trades: Who earns commissions regularly and with profit intention, is usually commercially active. Registration with the trade office usually costs between 15 and 60 € depending on the municipality.
  • Taxes: Commissions are subject to income tax. Whether sales tax applies depends, among other things, on whether you can use the small business regulation. It is best to clarify the details with a tax advice.

This section provides a general overview and does not replace legal or tax advice.

Step 4: Select Partner Programs

Now we are talking about the specific programs. Instead of registering with each shop individually, it is best to register with an affiliate network. There you manage many programs through one account, see all the numbers in one place and get your commissions collected paid out.

In the selection, these key figures help:

EPC
Merit per click. The best size to compare programs – more important than the commission amount alone.
Cookie duration
The longer, the more subsequent purchases will still be assigned to you. 30 days is common.
Reversal rate
High cancellation rates eat your commissions. Look for fair releases.
Permitted forms of advertising
Does your channel fit the rules? Some programs exclude e-mail or coupon pages.

Start with three to five programs that really fit your content. For starters, programs with automatic release are suitable, because some advertisers only accept new partners from a certain reach. In the Adlesa directory you can see commission, EPC, cookie duration and approval type for each program.

Step 5: Create content that sells

Successful affiliate content has one thing in common: it helps people make a purchase decision. These formats work especially well because readers are about to buy:

  • Reviews: A product rated in detail and honestly, with strengths and weaknesses.
  • Comparisons: “Product A vs. Product B” – ideal for readers who fluctuate between two options.
  • Best lists: "The 7 best hiking shoes for beginners" with clear recommendations for different needs.
  • Purchase advice: What to look for when buying, with product recommendations at the end.
  • Instructions: "How to set up your home office" with the right products in the right places.

The most important success factor is credibility. Show your own photos, real experiences and also the disadvantages of a product. Readers quickly notice whether someone only distributes links or advises honestly – and only buy on recommendations they trust.

After unlocking, you create your links on the network. Three rules bring more commissions from the start:

  1. Deeplinks instead of homepage.Link to a Deeplink directly the recommended product. Who has to search first, jumps off.
  2. Place links where the decision is made. In comparison tables, product boxes and directly after the conclusion, significantly more readers click than in the introduction.
  3. Provides each link with a sub-ID. So you can see later which article and which button brings revenue (see Sub-ID).

A detailed guide with examples can be found in the guides Affiliate links: What they are and how to create them.

Step 7: Building Reach

The best content deserves nothing if no one sees it. How you attract visitors depends on the channel:

  • Search engines: Write to specific searches with a purchase intention, such as "Running shoes for broad feet". Less competitive, specific search terms initially bring visitors faster than general ones.
  • Pinterest: Create multiple pins with different images for each article. Pins often spread over months. How this works in detail, shows the guides Affiliate marketing with Pinterest.
  • Social Media:Publish regularly and use formats of the platform such as reels, shorts or stories with link stickers.
  • Newsletter: Collect email addresses from the beginning. Your own list makes you independent of algorithms.

Plan realistically: With a new website, it often takes three to six months for Google to place the first articles well. Regularity beats perfection – rather a good contribution every week than a perfect one once a quarter.

Step 8: Measure and optimize

As soon as the first clicks come, the exciting part begins. Check out the reporting regularly:

  • What content gets the most clicks on affiliate links?
  • Which programs have the best conversion rate and the highest EPC?
  • Which link positions work best, measured via sub-IDs?

Then build what works: Update successful articles, add comparison tables, write related content, and replace programs with weak EPC with better alternatives. Often the optimization of existing content brings more than a new article.

Realistic schedule for beginners

Every start goes differently, but this process is typical of a new website that is built part-time:

  1. Month 1
    Creating foundations

Set niche, set up website or channel, imprint and privacy, register with a network, publish first three to five content.

  2. Month 2–3
    Building content

Publish regularly, apply to partner programs, build in links. First visitors, but hardly any sales.

  3. Month 4–6
    First commissions

Content becomes visible in search engines, first regular clicks and sales. Time to evaluate the numbers.

  4. Month 6–12
    Extension and optimization

Deepen successful topics, update content, test further programs. Revenue grows with reach.

How much can you earn as a beginner?

The honest answer: This depends heavily on niche, reach and content. Many beginners earn only a few euros a month in the first year, others build up an income of several hundred euros on a part-time basis. A simple calculation shows what matters:

Calculation example

A guide blog about home office equipment has 10,000 visitors a month. 8 % click on an affiliate link, the average EPC of the advertised programs is 0.25 €.

Visitors
10.000
Clicks
10,000 × 8 % = 800
EPC
0,25 €
Commission
800 × 0.25 € = 200 € per month

As you can see, three levers determine earnings – the number of visitors, the percentage that clicks on links, and the EPC of the programs. Whoever doubles one of these values doubles his revenue. This is exactly why the optimization from step 8 is worthwhile. More example calculations and strategies can be found in the guides Earning money with partner programs.

Frequent errors at start

  • Too wide a niche. Against large portals on general topics, a new page hardly has a chance.
  • Only look at the commission. A high percentage is of little use if no one buys. Compare programs through the EPC.
  • Content without added value. Copied manufacturer specifications and lists full of links convince neither readers nor search engines.
  • Misplaced marking. It can be expensive and it costs trust.
  • Give up too early. Most projects fail not because of the concept, but because after a few weeks without result is over.
  • Do not evaluate numbers. Without sub-IDs and a regular look into reporting, you optimize in blind flight.

Conclusion

Starting affiliate marketing is easy, so having success takes patience. Choose a niche with purchase intent, focus on one channel, choose programs by EPC instead of commission only, and create content that helps with real buying decisions. Those who consistently follow through over a few months and evaluate their figures lay the basis for steadily growing income. You can take the first step directly: Register for free as a publisher at Adlesa.

Choose a niche with a purchase intention, build a channel such as a website or a YouTube channel, register for free with an affiliate network and apply to suitable partner programs. Then you build affiliate links into helpful content and label them as advertising.

Participation in partner programs is free of charge. For your own website usually 5 to 15 € per month for domain and hosting, plus a one-time business registration. You can start social media channels without running costs.

Yes. YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest or a newsletter are also suitable. But having your own website has the advantage that it permanently brings visitors over search engines and you have full control.

A new website usually takes three to six months until the first regular commissions. Notable income often arises only after six to twelve months of consistent work.

Those who earn commissions regularly and with a profit intention are usually commercially active and must register a trade. The income is taxable. Details are best clarified with a tax advice.

A niche where you are familiar, where people are looking for products and comparisons and for which there are several suitable partner programs. The tighter the subject, the faster you become visible.
